Mission
The mission of Challenger Sports is to play with no pressure and only words of affirmation are spoken to the players at all times. Each participant plays during the game and scores are not kept. Games are also scheduled at times to coincide with the Recreation Authority's regular program. This helps to educate typical peers and parents about true sportsmanship and the importance of sports for everyonein the community. It also helps the Challenger participants feel like a true champion.
Challenger Sports uses a "buddy system", where each paticipant that needs assistance has a helper who shadows them throughout the game. Buddies can be siblings, friends, parents, or a volunteer over the age of 12. Duties include: pushing a wheelchair, giving direction, helping to throw a ball or swing a bat, and other necessary accomodations and adaptions to help them succeed in playing the sport.
